English as a Second Language - Outreach Department
ESL Homefront Learning offers:
- Free English instruction for learners at home for two hours a week, by trained volunteer ESL tutors. This program is for adult learners who cannot attend classes for a variety of reasons - physical, cultural or personal.
- You are eligible for this program if you live in Vancouver or Burnaby and are unable to go to classes.
- Free tutor training for volunteers who will then tutor on a one-to-one basis, in the home of adult learners living in Vancouver and Burnaby.
- This program is for Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents and Refugees.
- You are eligible for this program if you live in Vancouver or Burnaby, and are unable to go to classes.
- If you would like to study English but cannot attend a regular ESL class, call the Homefront Learning Program to apply for free tutoring in your home.
- You can study at home at any level of English (Literacy, Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced levels).
- The Homefront Instructor will visit you and assess your needs, and then provide you with a tutor.
- You will learn English from a trained volunteer tutor for two hours a week.

- Those who wish to register for the Homefront Tutor Training Program are asked to attend an Orientation/Registration session.
- Grade 12 English equivalency
- Fluency and accuracy in English
- Two references
- A clear Criminal Record Search (because tutors will be going to learners' homes)
- Any Criminal Record Search fee will be reimbursed to volunteers who successfully complete the Training Program and are placed with a learner
Tutor Training and Assignment:
- The Homefront Program provides tutors with a free, 4-day, 12-hours training course at Broadway Campus, which includes a one-to-one tutoring practicum with an ESL learner during the last session. There are scheduled training sessions throughout the year.
- Tutors are assigned to learners who have been referred to the program and assessed by the Homefront Instructors.
- The Homefront Instructor introduces the tutor and the learner in the learner's home.
Tutor Support:
- Tutors receive guidance and ongoing support fron the Homefront Instructors
- The Homefront Instructors provide materials and books for the tutors to use with their learners
- Tutors have access to the books, worksheets and tapes available in the Homefront Office/Resource Room as well as the Broadway Campus Library
- Tutors receive Newsletters and can attend workshops put on by the Instructors
Tutor Commitment:
- Tutors are required to volunteer for a minimum of 50 hours (approximately 6 months) at which time they receive a Statement of Completion from Vancouver Community College
